1. [NEW] The Kapor Foundation Research Fellowship - For Journalists & Researchers

This Fellowship supports journalists producing long-form investigative reports and tech policy researchers conducting research, analysis, or evaluation that informs policy related to the Kapor Foundation’s three priority areas, with an emphasis on responsible AI and tech ethics. Research is a vital tool in dismantling systemic inequities in the tech sector. By supporting researchers and investigative journalists who are deeply exploring these complex issues, the hope is to foster a deeper understanding of the barriers that exist but also drive actionable solutions. $35,000 will be awarded.

Deadline: June 30, 2026

Apply to this opportunity.

2. [NEW] Tarbell Grants - For Original Journalistic Reporting on AI

As artificial intelligence grows more influential, the companies building it and the policymakers regulating it warrant the kind of scrutiny that journalism exists to provide. Tarbell believes rigorous, independent reporting serves the public interest—demystifying technical developments, following the money, and documenting what happens when these systems enter the real world.

Tarbell offers grants of $1,000–$20,000 to support original reporting on AI published in established outlets, whether from freelancers or staff. They primarily fund written journalism but are open to supporting other formats. They welcome submissions from all experienced journalists and media creators: both staff writers/editors/producers and freelancers are welcome to apply. Journalists with an investigative background are particularly encouraged to apply.

This round, they’re seeking applications across six focus areas:

  • Accountability reporting on frontier AI companies

  • AI policy and politics

  • AI explainers and analysis

  • AI in government and militaries

  • AI labor impacts

  • AI developments in China

Deadline: July 12, 2026
